Change in Cribs

Danny measured the space for the crib today so I went to the exchange website to find the dimensions. Not only do they not have the measurements, but they also stopped selling the one I had picked out. Grr.
So anyway, I picked out two new ones that I have to choose from. The first is the Storkcraft Chelsea 4-in-1 crib they sell for $189. I really don't like that it has wheels.

The second is the Million Dollar Baby Emily 4-in-1 crib the Exchange sells for $259.

Both are fine, but so far I'm liking the second one better.
Here are the links: Storkcraft and Million Dollar Baby. Please tell me what you think.

  1. Off hand, it looks like the second one is more substantial and maybe a little better made. The fact that it can be used so many different ways, makes up for the cost. Maybe you get what you pay for. Did they actually have the bed or did you just see a picture?
If it's well made you can pack it all over the world and still use it for your grandchildren some day (now that's a scary thought!).

  2. I'm with your grandmother. The second crib looks to be the best choice. The flexibility of it is worth the extra $. Thank you for showing us what you're looking at. Next best thing to being there! Love you both! XXOOX Mom/Tracy

  3. The first one also converts just like the second. Does that change your opinion any?

  4. Ditto what Danny said. They're essentially the same. And the issue with both is that it doesn't come with the conversion kit that changes it to a full size bed. That is an extra $100 or so.

  5. Your Dad wanted me to look around here and see if anyone carries either bed. He said he would like to see them before he judged.
I did notice they both convert. My impression was that they only need the side rails to make the full size bed, I suppose some cross slats also.
If you liked the one with wheels, but not the wheels just take them off.
I really think either one would probably do just fine, I just thought the second one looked a little stronger.

  6. I was just thinking...you could probably pick up the little cups that go under the legs of furniture and use those under the wheels and the bed couldn't move.

  7. That's what I told Lori, but she doesn't like that idea because she feels that the bed wouldn't be a sturdy or stable.

  8. That's funny...what is going in the bed an elephant?
It would probably be more stable. Think about the bed with the riser cups....now that was scary!

One thing about wheels, if they are small and you ever have hard wood floors they can dent and mark the floor. With a rug the wheels would not move so much.
I have a feeling the bed with wheels is not going to make the grade.
Since you have to assemble the bed the wheels would be easy to leave in the box. Just more thoughts. How hard will it be to lift a baby out over the rail? Glad to hear your input Danny.

  9. I just don't like the wheels. I think they're useless. I thought about just not putting them on, but then there probably wouldn't be enough clearance for the drawer. I like the drawer, but the bed would probably always need wheels for it to fit.
About the risers... besides the fact that I still think they're too unsturdy for a baby's bed, it would also raise the bed too high.
The first one is nice because it looks like the side isn't as high, but I don't know if that is just an illusion.
You may consider looking at Walmart. I found one of them online there, but I don't know if they carry them in store.
Tracy, if you wanted, you could probably look at the Exchange again, but I doubt they have them. Either way I have to order from the catalog.

  10. This has been the first chance in a couple of days I've had to re-visit all this. Too funny about the elephant going in the crib!

Having the crib on wheels is convenient for moving it for cleaning purposes. Without being too graphic, sometimes babies find stuff to paint the walls with that we would find unacceptable, so being able to easily shift the crib is a good thing. Plus, having it on wheels amuses the baby when they start standing up and can make their bed move across the room at 3:00 a.m., thus assuring Mom knows they awake and ready to be amused. Ask me how I know...

Fortunately, you can pretty much rest assured that whichever you choose, it'll be safe. It's mostly more about how much you want to spend to get the look you want. XXOOX Mom/Tracy

  11. No No I didn't mean risers for the baby bed, I was reminding you of risers for the twin beds in Bellingham etc. I would NEVER put them on baby beds!
I was looking again at the Million bed and wondered if it had two side bars you would lift the baby over, can't tell to well from the pictures. Think about a ten pound sack of flour that you are lifting out of the bed all the time, then again the old cow-over-the-fence theory may apply here.
Wouldn't it be nice to just walk in and see a bed and say "that's the one" things get way to complicated any more.
I'm sure what ever you get will be fine, little what's-it will probably want to sleep with you and Danny all the time anyway.

    Good luck, Grandma
